Two James Forrestal Letters Signed as Secretary of the Navy. Both letters written to Paul C. Smith as Chief Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle.

1.) One page, 9 1/4" x 7"; January 9, 1946

Forrestal writes, in part:

"The longer I stay here the more I realize how amazing it is that we have been able to do the job in Government that has been done -- spotty as it is."

2.) One page, 10 1/2" x 7 7/8"; February 13, 1946

Forrestal writes, in part:

"Regardless of your personal wishes I intend to see to it that you get recognition. I do not feel responsible for what occurred before the summer of 1944, but from that time on I have a personal obligation in respect to the assignments that you were willing to undertake in the Fleet... as a matter of fact I would rather have the simple record of your own sequence of duty than a great many of the decorations I have seen."
