Two Gardner "Mike" Cowles and Two Fleur Cowles Typed Letters Signed; Political Commentary.

Three letters addressed to Mr. Paul C. Smith ("Dear Paul"), and the fourth a copy of a letter sent to George De Carvalho of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Carvalho won a Pulitzer Prize in 1952 for his stories of a "ransom racket" extorting money from Chinese in the United States for relations held in Communist China.

Gardner "Mike" Cowles writes, in part (July 15, 1952):

"The nomination of Eisenhower pleased me greatly. I think a breath of fresh air is blowing through the Republican party. Some of the younger western governors impressed me enormously. I think they are going to play a big part in Republican affairs in the next few years."
