ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Brian Robert Johnson (1932-2020) was a Canadian watercolorist born in Victoria, British Columbia. He studied in the United States at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, graduating with distinction. Johnson initially applied his training to industrial design in Vancouver before returning to Vancouver Island and pursuing fine art. The coast of British Columbia became central to his artistic life. Johnson explored shorelines, harbors, rural structures, marine vessels, and secluded landscapes, studying the shifting relationships among light, land, and water. His watercolors combine careful observation with fluid passages, atmospheric color, and an interest in overlooked details that could transform a familiar setting. Johnson became a member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists in 1986 and was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in London in 1998. He received the Institute's annual medal for an outstanding exhibited work. Victoria later recognized his cultural contribution by naming him an Honorary Citizen. His work preserves the distinctive atmosphere of the Pacific coast through a medium especially suited to light, weather, and reflection.
