Edward L. Bernays Letter Signed "Edward" on Personal Letterhead; Two Pages, September 20, 1946.

Letter written to Mr. Paul C. Smith, Chief Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle. In his letter to Bernays, Smith turns down an offer of employment as he feels his skills are needed at the Chronicle.

Bernays writes, in part:

"I agree with you too that monetary goals must be of even less than minor importance to people who have qualities of leadership. It is all a question as to what you want to do with your life and where, and certainly I cannot in any way even question your decision... the fees one receives in this profession... more than $100,000 a year from one client -- do give an individual a feeling of economic independence which, as you know, is extraordinarily rare."
